CIVIC LEADERSHIP

The Advanced Leadership Cohort is the sixth tier of the Civic Leadership Academy, designed for emerging and established Black leaders who are ready to take on greater civic responsibility and influence within Colorado. This cohort prepares participants for high-level engagement in public policy, board and commission service, community leadership, and public office.

Purpose

To cultivate a powerful network of Black civic leaders equipped with advanced skills, strategic knowledge, and the confidence to make meaningful impact across Colorado’s civic landscape.


Program Focus Areas

Participants will engage in intensive development across six core areas:

1. Advanced Policy & Legislative Strategy

  • Deep-dive into Colorado legislative processes
  • Policy analysis and bill evaluation
  • Training on crafting policy recommendations

2. Government Leadership Pathways

  • Preparing candidates for public office
  • Understanding state and local governance systems
  • Navigating political appointments and board service

3. Public Communication & Media Strategy

  • Professional message development
  • Engaging with press, interviews, and public speaking
  • Digital advocacy tools and strategic storytelling

4. Community Power-Building & Organizing

  • Advanced grassroots organizing methodologies
  • Coalition building and mobilization
  • Strategic campaign planning

5. Equity-Centered Leadership

  • Applying racial equity principles to civic decision-making
  • Systems change frameworks
  • Inclusive leadership strategies

6. Strategic Partnerships & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Building relationships with policymakers, agencies, and leaders
  • Effective collaboration and negotiation

Program Description

The Civic Leadership Academy is a comprehensive leadership development program designed to equip emerging and established leaders with the knowledge, skills, and networks necessary to drive meaningful change in their communities. This intensive program combines academic rigor with practical application, preparing participants to address complex civic challenges and lead with integrity, vision, and effectiveness.

Program Mission

To develop a diverse cohort of civic leaders who are equipped to:

  • Understand and navigate complex civic systems and processes
  • Build coalitions and mobilize communities around shared goals
  • Develop and implement effective strategies for community change
  • Communicate persuasively across diverse audiences
  • Lead with ethical principles and inclusive practices

Program Format

  • Duration: 6-12 weeks (flexible based on cohort needs)
  • Session Frequency: Weekly 3-hour sessions
  • Delivery Method: Hybrid format combining in-person workshops and virtual learning
  • Time Commitment: Approximately 5-7 hours per week (including sessions, readings, and assignments)
  • Cohort Size: 15-25 participants per cohort

Eligibility Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

To be eligible for the Civic Leadership Academy, applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. Age Requirement

  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application

2. Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required
  • Bachelor's degree preferred but not required
  • Relevant professional experience may substitute for formal education

3. Professional Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience OR
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in community, volunteer, or student organizations OR
  • Current employment or active involvement in civic, nonprofit, or community-based work

4. Commitment

  • Ability to commit to full program duration (6-12 weeks)
  • Availability to attend all scheduled sessions (with exceptions for emergencies)
  • Willingness to complete assigned readings and projects
  • Commitment to actively participate in cohort activities

5. Geographic Location

  • Preference given to residents of the service area
  • Must be able to attend in-person sessions (if applicable)
  • Virtual participation available for remote participants

6. Language Proficiency

  • Proficiency in English (reading, writing, and speaking)
  • Additional language skills are valued but not required

Preferred Qualifications

While not required, the following qualifications strengthen an application:

  • Leadership Experience: Demonstrated leadership roles in professional, community, or volunteer settings
  • Civic Engagement: Active involvement in community organizations, advocacy groups, or civic initiatives
  • Diversity: Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in leadership practice
  • Clear Goals: Articulated vision for how the program will advance their leadership goals
  • Recommendations: Strong recommendations from professional or community references

Application Process

  1. Submit Application - Complete online application form, upload required documents, submit by application deadline
  2. Application Review - Applications reviewed by selection committee, notification within 2-3 weeks
  3. Interview (if selected) - Selected candidates invited for brief interview
  4. Final Selection - Final decisions communicated within 1 week of interviews
